When pursuing transformative opportunities, entrepreneurs prefer to search for big changes and big markets when the opposite could be more successful. I agree with Arif that it is much more likely that the following methods would find a disruptive opportunity around the corner:

  1. Focus on a small business niche initially. Intuitively, disrupting a large market has greater potential, but it’s also like running an aircraft carrier.
  2. Select a technology that seems to be inferior to the big incumbents somehow, Established players typically think in terms of bigger, stronger, and quicker, whereas smaller, cheaper, and simpler can really please more customers.
  3. Think of personal computers compared to mainframes or movable cameras versus professional cameras.
  4. Focus on broad but moderate to low growth segments. Typically, for a reason, these are low growth-a new technology or price point might easily be the catalyst for a big chance, High-growth segments, on the other hand, will look more enticing but are likely to be targeted by large players and several other rivals.
  5. Look for large client populations that are unattractive to incumbents. There may be individuals who, due to sales levels or location, can not afford current goods but need the solution.
  6. Explore markets were an outsider us you. Most business consultants suggest that you stick with the field of business you know, where you have inside experience.
  7. Compete against markets that are non-consumer and non-existent. The most disruptive products are those that have never existed before, and there are no predictions even available to increase the probability.

Of course, the most likely disruptive alternatives, such as bypassing traditional networks to go straight to consumers, seeking a cost breakthrough of magnitude, addressing disadvantaged needs, or providing drastic changes to new and existing customers in ease of use and convenience, should never be overlooked by entrepreneurs looking for disruptive opportunities.
